There is no better time to treat yourself to a summer pedicure than now that sandal season has started.

A professional pedicure may be the ultimate in pleasure, but you can still achieve a polished look in your own house by following a few simple tips and tactics.

Founder and CEO of Nailvana.LA in Los Angeles, Gina Alcedo walked us through the process of DIY pedicure. Here are five simple steps to help you get started.

Soaking your feet will soften cuticles and calluses as well as clean them. Pour a pleasant spa-like experience, fill a tub or basin with warm water.

STEP 1: Soak and Exfoliate Your Feet

Avoid too-short nails. This can damage your nails and leave you with little room to paint. If you don't know how to cut nails, use a coarse file.

STEP 2: Cut and File 

Then removes cuticles with a cuticle remover like Blue Cross Cuticle Remover. Towel them off. Gently push them back with a cuticle pusher.

Afterwards, use an alcohol- or polish-removing solution to remove any remaining oils from the nails.

STEP 4: Remove Oils

To remove any remaining paint from the skin around the nail, use a cotton swab dipped in nail polish remover.
